My name is Nick Kaufman. I play guitar. I surf and skate. I paint oils and water colors. I play ice hockey.

Oh yeah, I am also a graphic designer.

Being a graphic designer is great, and now that I have found the right career for me, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Whether it is working as a freelancer, or working for a large corporation, it is just a fun job.  Take a step back and think about what you see when you walk into the creative department of most companies. Regardless of the setting, they are usually enjoying themselves. They are working, and getting the job done, but still having fun. And I would probably fit right in. I will do whatever it takes to get the job done, but I love my job and will do it with a smile on my face.

So how did I become a graphic designer? I am sure there are plenty of stories out there like this one, but it still fun to tell, and people seem to genuinely enjoy it.  Some people know exactly what they want to do from a young age. That wasn’t me.  I was a business major at Cal State Long Beach when I dropped out of college. With no plan in place, I worked a few dead end jobs before ending up at Mossimo. It was in an industry that I liked, and the atmosphere was great. But I was working in the warehouse so the pay barely got me by, and the work was boring. While I was there, I occasionally got to spend time in the graphics department. As I would leave their offices, I would always think those guys have the best jobs around. It just looked like they enjoyed doing their jobs. Eventually the company went downhill, and six months later my entire department was outsourced.

While it was pretty stressful not having a job, it was also a turning point for me. I took the opportunity, did a bit of soul searching, and found a new job at sign shop doing design and production work. One year later I decided to take it a step further and went back to school, receiving my BFA in Media and Multi Media Design (Magna Cum Laude). And I have enjoyed every minute since.
